| Here's
an interesting story that came full circle after about 14 years. |
| This
spread was in the Select catalog for 1989. We dont have a big scanner
so it's pieced together from 6 scans...the two page spread is about
13" X 18" and features three images of Sun including the
flattering center photo. The subjects were all volunteers and performers
at Susanne Bartsch's first Love Ball charity event. The blurb read
"Special thanks to Suzanne Bartsch and the subjects for their
cooperation and caring." Someone who had an extra copy gave the
catalog to Sun. He was thrilled and called the photographer to see
if he could get a print or two for his collection. First, the 'assistant'
who took the call told Sun that he could buy prints. When Sun told
this assistant that he never signed a release the assistant changed
from friendly to terse and apprehensive. He reassured the assistant
that all he wanted was a print or two…after all, his image was
being used to advertise the photographer's work and he was not paid
a fee and did not sign a release. The assistant pointed out the charitable
nature of the event. Sun pointed out that this use of the imagery
to him had nothing to do with the event and that Bob Frame did not
give away his services. Ultimately the assistant agreed that a couple
of prints were an acceptable request given the extent to which his
image was being used to advertise her employer's services (16,000
copies of the Select catalog were distributed.) Sun was told that
Mr. Frame was out of town and he should call back in a week. A week
later he was told to call back in a week. And again. At this point
the runaround he was being given was more than obvious. Sun gave up.
When this page was originally published this story was something of
a swipe at Bob because the incident had left a bad taste in Sun's
mouth. It ended with a request for a print, which has delightfully
come to pass. Bob Frame contacted Sun and told him that he never knew
anything about what had happened. Bob has graciously given us a print,
which is on the next page. Sun
says the taste in his mouth is turning to spearmint and his faith
in humanity is now on the road to restoration. Bombs away! |
