It appears that 1992, one of Sun’s most prolific years as a song writer
(The Song Writing), was also a period
of transition from writing exclusively for other artists to writing for himself
as well even though he didn’t know it yet. Sun’s first effort as an artist (with
partner Bob Victor) 100th Monkey
wasn’t conceived until 1993. Also, Sun’s song writing seemed to broaden in ‘92
as he was writing things like “Nowhere” and “Move On” among other songs he eventually
hopes to share, that didn’t seem geared toward any particular market.
He started “Move On” on April 20th, 1992 and finished it on the 25th
when he wrote the second verse and the bridge and changed the chorus from:
Got
to move on - can’t go back
And though you won’t forget
Got
to move on - down the track
to
the way it appears on the album. He also added the line “Beyond the sorrow and
regret” on the 25th. He made only one small lyrical change just days before
recording the vocal for Inquire Within.
When he had first written it he had worked out the chords with Art Labriola
who was a keyboard player. Dan had to work out these chords for the guitar which
wasn’t too easy and as he was playing he half accidentally did some open strumming
which Sun fell in love with. That open strumming along with the shakers Sun
asked for to give the feeling of a train chugging along seemed to set the tone
for the entire song. As Mark was playing the guitar parts Dan came up with the
idea for the ‘San Francisco Sound’ of the ba-ba’s. Sun fell in love with that
too.
The original sketch of the song didn’t really sound like much but early
on, this one began to sound like the stand-out it is. Libby Johnson (Dan’s wife
and also an accomplished recording artist - 22 Brides) came in one day to sing
the girl ba-ba’s in the verses. Dan hadn’t planned on having ba-ba’s throughout
the song but changed his mind and when it came time to sing the ba-ba’s for
the choruses Libby wasn’t available. But as it turned out Sun didn’t know Dan
had planned to try to get Libby back in when he commented how much he liked
it flip-flopping back and forth between the two sounds.
The only major change Dan suggested Sun make was made at the very beginning
of the project and that was that he thought
Sun ought to change the order of the songs by moving “Move On” after
“If Love Has Ever Passed Me By” instead of before it as was originally planned.
Sun thought momentarily and agreed. A few days later this change wound up making
a huge difference. At first, “Feel” seemed to be wanting to be the saddest song
on the album but changing the order changed that, at least for Sun. It also
put “If Love Has Ever Passed Me By” in the middle of the album and for Sun that
sort of made it the heart of the record. Also, after the order was changed Sun
got the idea to have another segue between “Move On” and “Feel”. Sun also wanted
a train sound effect which was inspired by Harpers Bizarre’s version of Chattanooga
Choo Choo. It worked out beautifully.
“Move On” was the last lead vocal Sun sang on Inquire Within.
