The lyrics for this one were written in August of 1993 toward the end
of the creation of the material for 100th Monkey's album demo. In fact, Sun
showed the lyric to Bob Victor who liked
it very much and thought it would actually be a good one for additional 100th
Monkey material. But it was put on the back burner as there were other songs
that were either completely tracked with minor lyrical rewrites needed or partially
tracked finished songs.
And there it stayed until early 1999 when Sun decided to go back in the
studio. Along with some new songs that he was writing, Sun was also going through
the ‘stacks’ for additional inspiration when he came across “I Didn’t Have Time
To Cry On Thursday”. Though the decision to go quasi-retro hadn’t yet been made
this lyric was a stand-out and the minute he pulled it out of the stack he just
started singing it. Just about the only rewrite from the original in the note
book was the triple repeat of the line “I didn’t have time”.
You might wonder where someone gets the idea for such a lyric. This one
is based on a true story. Often stress builds up to a shrieking crescendo and
there are many ways to alleviate it. Smashing bottles against a wall, taking too
many cardio classes, sex, booze, drugs, etc. oh yeah, and having a good cry.
Well Sun was feeling stressed out and sometimes inducing tears by listening to
‘sad old songs’ would get them flowing and one Thursday Sun had planned to
have a good cry but got home very late and determined that there wasn’t enough
time so he fed the cats and went straight to bed.
The next day he remembered the episode and wrote “I Didn’t Have Time
To Cry On Thursday” on his titles list and about three weeks later wrote the
entire lyric in one sitting.
Sun wanted to try a more Peter & Gordon-y approach a’la “I Go To Pieces” with a delicious harmony but Dan didn’t think that was a good call. Sun wasn’t dead set on it so went along with Dan but he still wonders how it would sound...
